An innocent kindergartener was busy getting ready for the end of the day in the hallway of Lake City Elementary School. I can vividly remember her energy and happiness, as she gathered up all of her winter items for possibly a long bus ride home. She was simply being a child, singing and dancing, and more than likely procrastinating to get back into the classroom. It was during her twirling around with a huge smile that I noticed her feet. Just bare feet. No socks. I asked her about her socks and if they had got wet during recess. She looked up at me, still with her contagious smile and said no I don’t have enough socks for all week of school. She turned and skipped into her class. I stood there in awe contemplating how a child does not have many pairs of socks. It really didn’t matter, what mattered to me was how can I help this student. That evening several pairs of socks were purchased for this little girl and any other student who may be in need of a simple necessity . . . socks.
Within 24 hours a simple thought of how can I help led me to writing ideas down in one subject notebook. What was needed? A friend for the students. Uhh, I liked the sounds of that a friend for the students. Where was help needed? Right in our community, Lake City Area Schools. That moment ~ Friends for Students of LC Schools ~ was wrote on the cover of my spiral notebook.
Just a simple thought I had over 12 years ago.
The past twelve years would not have been successful if it was not for those who support Friends for Students of LC Schools and want to support the students at LCAS. Just imagine how many students, hundreds of students, we have helped since 2011. We have done so much more then a pair of socks.
